Motorcyclists and veterans from across the country are expected to travel to Logan County later this month for the annual EODMC GySgt Spicer Memorial Veterans Run and Motorcycle Rodeo, a tribute to fallen Marine Gunnery Sgt. David Shane Spicer and others who have served in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal community.
Spicer was killed in action on July 13, 2009, outside Delhi, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations against enemy forces.
He was 33 years old.
Born October 13, 1975, in Dayton, Ohio, Spicer was the son of Sandra and Gary Lockwood.
He grew up in Logan County and graduated from Benjamin Logan High School in 1994 before immediately enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.
Over the next 15 years, Spicer built a distinguished military career as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician.
He served with the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF) at Indian Head, Maryland, before continuing his service with the Second EOD Company at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
At the time of his death, he was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.
On July 23, 2005, he married Katrina Thompson.
Throughout his military career, Spicer earned numerous honors, including the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, Purple Heart, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
Spicer’s sacrifice left a lasting impact on his hometown and the military community.
Spicer’s mother, Sandy Lockwood, joined 98.3 WPKO’s show, Listen Up! on Sunday with News Director April King.
Lockwood talks about her son and remembers him as her “hero,”

Portions of U.S. Route 33 through Logan County were designated as the Marine GySgt David S. Spicer Memorial Highway, and a scholarship fund was established in his memory to benefit local students.

His memory continues to be honored through annual memorial rides and scholarships.
One of the largest of those tributes returns Saturday, June 20, 2026, with the EODMC GySgt Spicer Memorial Veterans Run and Motorcycle Rodeo.
Hosted by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Motorcycle Club, the event honors Spicer’s service and sacrifice while supporting veterans and members of the EOD community.
Registration begins at 10 a.m., with kickstands up at noon.
The cost is $20 per motorcycle, and organizers welcome all bikes to participate.
Riders can depart from one of three starting locations: No Cages Harley-Davidson, Harley-Davidson of Xenia, or Piqua Harley-Davidson.
The ride will conclude at 2606 County Highway 24 North in DeGraff.
In addition to the memorial ride, the event will feature a motorcycle rodeo, food, auctions, raffles, and a 50/50 drawing.
Organizers say the day is designed to bring together veterans, riders, families, and supporters while remembering those who have served and sacrificed.
Community members are encouraged to attend, support the cause, and help celebrate the life of a Marine whose legacy continues to inspire people throughout Logan County and across the nation.
