More than two years after an EF-3 tornado destroyed the original Our Lady of Fatima Shrine at Indian Lake, a new shrine will officially be dedicated on Friday, August 14, with the return of the annual Catholic feast-day Mass on Saturday, August 15.
Both events are open to the public.
The original shrine, built in 1964, was heavily damaged during the March 14, 2024 tornado.
The nearly 20-foot-tall statue of Mary was blown into Indian Lake and remained missing for more than two weeks before being recovered by a local volunteer dive team about 150 feet offshore.
Rather than recreate the original shrine, the American Society of Ephesus, which owns the property, launched a statewide design competition to create a modern landmark while honoring its history.
The redesigned shrine features a welcoming statue of Mary with open arms, three bronze statues of the Fatima children, a Rosary Walk, informational displays with QR codes, and a cornerstone containing a time capsule to be opened in 100 years.
The new shrine also reuses several original features, including two benches and the kneeler, while eliminating fountains and other moving parts to reduce future maintenance.
The shrine remains closed until the dedication as crews complete final work. Public parking will not be available at the shrine.
Visitors should park at St. Mary of the Woods Church, 464 Madison Avenue in Russells Point, where free shuttle service will be provided for both events.
Dedication ceremonies begin Friday, August 14, at 5:30 p.m.
The Feast of the Assumption Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 15, at 5:00 p.m. by Archbishop Robert G. Casey, followed by a free cookie and punch reception.
