Authorities are investigating a shooting incident that occurred late last night on East Chillicothe Avenue in Bellefontaine. Police received multiple reports of gunfire around 9:11 PM from residents in the 200 to 400 blocks of the street.
Initial reports indicated that the shots were fired west of the 400 block. A subsequent caller, situated between the 228 and 300 blocks, confirmed hearing similar gunfire. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they were directed to South Park Street and East Chillicothe Avenue, following eyewitness accounts from a local resident.
Officers responded to the area, where they were approached by a woman from the 300 block of East Chillicothe Avenue. She directed them to the vicinity of a stop sign near South Park Street. During their search, law enforcement spoke with residents from the 200 block of East Chillicothe Avenue, while officers saw a man leaving his residence who confirmed the shots were fired near South Park Street.
Officers repositioned their patrol vehicle to South Park Street and conducted a foot search. They were flagged down by a local resident, who identified a shell casing on the road. A thorough inspection revealed two additional shell casings in the 200 block of South Park Street. The road was subsequently closed to ensure public safety.
Another resident reported being in a room adjacent to South Park Street at the time of the shooting. He did not see any vehicles or hear any activity following the gunfire.
Despite reports of four shots fired, only three shell casings were recovered. K-9 Pyro searched the area and did not locate any additional evidence.
A resident later reported hearing three to four shots followed by the sound of a car door closing around 9:10 PM. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances and individuals involved in the shooting.
