A Columbus man was arrested early Friday morning after Bellefontaine police say he was driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit on U.S. 33 and showed signs of impairment.

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, the traffic stop happened around 1:20 a.m. Thursday on westbound U.S. 33 near the U.S. 68 exit.

Officers clocked a black Buick SUV traveling between 91 and 93 miles per hour in a posted 70-mile-per-hour zone.

After catching up to the vehicle, the officer noticed it touch the center lane dividing lines multiple times before initiating a traffic stop.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old Calvin Griffin of Columbus, reportedly appeared nervous, was speaking rapidly, and told the officer he was speeding because he was trying to find an exit to use the restroom.

Police also detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Griffin told officers he had last smoked marijuana around 9:00 p.m.

After conducting a series of field tests, officers determined Griffin was believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Griffin was arrested and transported to the Bellefontaine Police Department, where he submitted both breath and urine samples.

Police said the breath test registered 0.000 on the Intoxilyzer 8000.

His urine sample was sent to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory for analysis.

Griffin was cited for operating a vehicle under the influence and speeding.

He was issued a mandatory court appearance Monday morning in Bellefontaine Municipal Court before being released to a sober driver.
