A heat wave will continue across Logan and Champaign counties through the week, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect until 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
The National Weather Service says the heat index, or what it feels like outside, could reach 105 degrees during the hottest parts of the day.
The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high of 89 degrees Monday, followed by overnight lows in the low 70s.
Temperatures climb into the lower 90s Tuesday through Thursday, with highs of 92 on Tuesday and 93 on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Heat index values on Tuesday could reach 101 degrees, with even higher values expected later in the week due to increasing humidity.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, people working outside, and those without air conditioning.
To stay safe, it’s recommended that you:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Check on family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
- Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
The heat wave is expected to last through Thursday evening, so anyone spending time outdoors should take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heat-related illness.
