The City of Urbana is preparing to launch several road improvement and pavement preservation projects this summer, with more than $1 million in work planned across city streets.
According to city officials, the first phase of work begins with the annual crack sealing program, which is scheduled to start on or after Thursday, June 11. The city awarded a $70,490.88 contract to Bituminous Pavement Systems, LLC to complete the project.
Crack sealing is designed to prevent water from entering pavement and causing further deterioration. Streets scheduled for treatment include portions of Monument Square, Main Street, Scioto Street, Miami Street, East Water Street, Hill Street, Patrick Avenue, East Court Street, East Church Street, Wallace Street, Sycamore Street, East Lawn Avenue, Washington Avenue and Dorothy Moore Avenue.
Officials say parking restrictions will be posted in advance within work zones, and vehicles parked in violation of those restrictions will be towed.
The city has also awarded an $854,838 contract to Barrett Paving Materials Inc. for asphalt resurfacing projects focused on the southeast portion of Urbana. Work is scheduled to begin after July 13 and must be completed by Oct. 16.
Streets slated for resurfacing include Bon Air Drive, Pine Tree Drive, Camelot Drive, Cambridge Drive, New Haven Drive, Parkway Boulevard, Pro Circle, Bentwood Court and Players Court.
Additional pavement preservation work will be completed through a partnership between the City of Urbana, Urbana Township and the Champaign County Engineer’s Office. Childrens Home Road between East Lawn Avenue and the eastern corporation limits, along with East Lawn Avenue between Childrens Home Road and Dellinger Road, will receive chip seal and fog seal treatments at an estimated cost of $16,337.56. Both roadways will be restriped after the work is completed.
The city has also contracted with First Star Safety LLC for $18,248.91 to refresh pavement markings on several major roadways, including Monument Square, portions of Main Street, Miami Street, Scioto Street, East Lawn Avenue, Childrens Home Road and Dellinger Road.
Another pavement preservation project will take place on South High Street, where Pavement Technology Incorporated will apply Reclamite, a treatment designed to extend the life of asphalt pavement. The contract for that work totals $17,160.
In addition to city-led projects, the Ohio Department of Transportation will resurface State Route 55 between U.S. Route 68 South and Urbana’s southwestern corporation limits. The work will be completed by A&B Asphalt Corporation, with the city’s share of the project totaling $92,392.25.
That project is expected to begin near the end of June and is scheduled for completion by Aug. 31.
City officials say the combined projects are intended to preserve existing pavement, improve driving conditions and extend the lifespan of Urbana’s transportation infrastructure.
