Mechanicsburg captured the OHSAA Division VI District Championship on Thursday afternoon with a gritty 2-1 victory over the Liberty Union Lions in a classic pitcher’s duel led by ace Conner Eyink.
Eyink was sensational on the mound from start to finish, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five. The senior needed only 76 pitches — 52 for strikes — to guide the Indians to the title and a spot in the regional semifinals.
The right-hander came out firing, needing just eight pitches to work through the opening inning as the Burg defense backed him up early.
Then the offense delivered first.
Eli Wilson ripped a one-out double into left field for Mechanicsburg’s first baserunner of the afternoon. Two batters later, Hank Huffman legged out an infield single to put runners on the corners. During Bodee Delong’s at-bat, both runners advanced on a balk by Liberty Union starter Owen Thomas, and moments later, another wild pitch allowed Wilson to sprint home for the game’s opening run and a 1-0 Mechanicsburg lead.
Eyink settled into a rhythm from there.
He struck out the first two batters of the second inning and needed only nine pitches to retire the side. After the Burg offense went quietly in the bottom half, Eyink opened the third with another strikeout before Liberty Union finally broke through.
A five-pitch walk and a sacrifice bunt set the Lions up with a runner in scoring position, and a ground ball through the middle tied the game at 1-1 after three innings.
But Mechanicsburg answered immediately.
Eyink led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, then aggressively took second on a stolen base before advancing to third on another balk. Moments later, a pop fly into shallow right field was dropped, allowing Eyink to race home with what turned into the game-winning run.
From there, the ace handled the pressure.
Liberty Union threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Eyink and the Burg defense delivered every time. In the fifth, a runner reached third base before a groundout to third ended the inning. In the sixth, a leadoff single quickly turned dangerous as the tying run again reached third, but Huffman snagged a line drive at second and Eyink followed with a huge strikeout to preserve the 2-1 advantage.
Mechanicsburg had chances to add insurance but stranded runners in both the fifth and sixth innings, leaving the district title resting on Eyink’s right arm in the seventh.
He responded like an ace.
The first two Lion batters were retired on the very first pitch they saw, and then Eyink attacked the final hitter with a three-pitch strikeout, securing the District Championship.
Mechanicsburg finished with five hits from five different players. Wilson’s double helped spark the offense, while Eyink added a hit and scored the deciding run. Crew Lafary, Huffman, and Delong also collected hits in the victory.
The Indians improve to 21-3 and move on to the regional semifinals as one of the final 16 teams remaining in Division VI. Mechanicsburg is scheduled to face the Huntington Huntsmen on Wednesday, June 3, at Beavers Field in Lancaster.
