Bellefontaine’s Gracie Hood capped off an outstanding qualifying performance Thursday morning at the 2026 Junior Gold Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, finishing second overall in the 18U girls’ division and advancing to the championship rounds.

Competing among the nation’s top youth bowlers, Hood saved one of her strongest performances for the final qualifying block. She rolled games of 252, 200, 222, and 249 for a 923 series, her highest four-game block of the tournament. The performance pushed her final qualifying total to 3,448 pins, an average of 215.5 over 16 games, and 248 pins above the tournament’s 200-average “par” mark.

Hood entered the final block within striking distance of the lead and briefly moved into the top position after completing her set. However, tournament leader Taylor Kretz of Erie, Pennsylvania, answered with an impressive final block of her own, rolling a 946 series to secure the top qualifying position and finish 106 pins ahead of Hood in the final standings.

Throughout qualifying, Hood displayed remarkable consistency over four days of competition. She opened with an 807 series on Monday before improving to an 867 series on Tuesday. She followed with an 851 series on Wednesday and closed with her tournament-best 923 on Thursday, placing her among the elite bowlers in the 18U girls’ field.

The Junior Gold Championships feature many of the nation’s top youth bowlers, with competitors completing 16 qualifying games over four days. Following qualifying, the top 52 bowlers in the 18U girls’ division advance to the championship rounds, with all qualifying pinfall carrying over.

Hood now moves into Friday’s Advancer Round at Lucky Strike Eden Prairie, where she will compete in another 10 games. The first session begins at 7:30 a.m. with five games, after which approximately one-third of the remaining field will be eliminated. The remaining bowlers will return at 1:30 p.m. for five more games, with the field cut down to the final 16 competitors.

The combined totals from all 26 games bowled throughout qualifying and the Advancer Round will determine the 16 bowlers seeded into the championship bracket.

Bracket play begins Friday evening with matches at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Each matchup will consist of a two-game total-pinfall series, with the bowler recording the higher combined score advancing through the double-elimination bracket.

Bracket competition will continue Saturday morning until a champion is crowned. Hood enters the championship portion of the tournament as one of the top performers in the 18U girls’ division and will look to continue her impressive run on the national stage.
