A Bellefontaine man was cited for street racing after allegedly performing a burnout in the city’s west side Friday night, according to the Bellefontaine Police Department.

Police report that at approximately 9:40 p.m. on May 29, an officer on bicycle patrol near West Columbus Avenue and Evansville Street heard a vehicle engine revving loudly. The officer then observed a black Dodge Charger stopped in the roadway with its rear tires spinning, creating smoke and leaving a burnout mark on the pavement.

According to the report, the vehicle then accelerated forward, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop on West Chillicothe Avenue near Evansville Street.

The driver was identified as 34-year-old Johnny Williams Jr. of Bellefontaine. Police say Williams acknowledged the reason for the stop and told the officer he had been talked into performing the burnout by a friend.

Williams was cited for street racing, a first-degree misdemeanor under Ohio law. He was issued a mandatory court date of June 3 at 9 a.m. in Bellefontaine Municipal Court.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
