Before 1857, fires in the city of Bellefontaine were fought by residents armed with buckets of water from a spring and private wells. When the city suffered a devastating fire in the downtown business district on November 1st, 1856, thirty-one businesses were destroyed.

Since then, the city has provided professional fire and emergency medical services to local communities. By keeping 22 highly trained and qualified firefighters and medics on his staff, interim Chief Brian Wilson and his team deal with an average of 9 calls a day to treat medical emergencies and fires.

This week is National Fire Prevention and Awareness Week, and Wilson and his teams are honoring it by continuing to do what they do every day. With the help of local donors, the Bellefontaine Fire and EMS distributes learning materials to local schools and other facilities to help teach fire prevention.

Wilson also says that recent drought conditions that hampered the growing season for farmers have been alleviated with recent rainfalls, removing Logan County from the state-wide fire ban, but he still says practicing common sense while burning will go a long way.
