A significant fire broke out Wednesday evening in a cornfield on Wesley Chapel Road, prompting an urgent response from several local fire departments.

Smoke from the blaze was visible for miles, leading to a swift mutual aid call that included West Liberty, Urbana, Rosewood, St. Paris, and JSP fire departments.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered approximately five acres of corn engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to an additional 100 acres of crops due to windy conditions.

As conditions worsened, the St. Paris Fire Department was called in for further assistance.

Crews began containment efforts from the west side of the fire, working diligently toward the east.

The farmer on site played a crucial role in controlling the blaze by using a tractor and heavy tillage equipment to create a fire line, significantly slowing the fire’s advance.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all responding units, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, limiting damage to less than ten acres of corn.

The West Liberty Fire Department expressed gratitude for the prompt assistance from Urbana, Rosewood, St. Paris, and JSP fire departments, highlighting Urbana Battalion 1 for taking command and Lt. 95 for ensuring a steady water supply during the operation.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Local officials are reminding residents to exercise caution during dry conditions to prevent similar incidents.
