A Wapakoneta man was cited for operating a vehicle under the influence following an injury crash Friday morning on U.S. Route 33 near Township Road 239.

According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 9:12 a.m.

A 2008 Toyota Yaris, driven by Shawn Michael, 39, of Wapakoneta, was traveling eastbound when it went left of center and struck a 2021 Peterbilt 579 semi, driven by Dennis Jones, 60, of Laurelville, which was traveling westbound.

The semi driver was checked for injuries at the scene.

During the investigation, a firefighter with the Indian Joint Fire District alerted deputies to a glass jar containing marijuana on the passenger-side floorboard of Michael’s vehicle.

A second container holding rolled marijuana joints was also found.

Both items were seized as evidence.

Deputies reported detecting the odor of marijuana and noticing several signs of impairment.

Field sobriety tests were conducted, and Michael later admitted to smoking marijuana and taking Adderall prior to driving.

He said he was traveling to Columbus at the time of the crash.

Michael was arrested and cited for operating a vehicle under the influence and issued a marked lanes violation.

He declined to provide a urine sample and was later released to a sober driver.

According to law enforcement, just after 9:00 AM on Friday, a black Toyota sedan crossed left of center on U.S. 33 in Lakeview, near the intersection of Township Road 239, and collided with a semi.

No injuries were reported.

Deputies with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office handled the crash, and the roadway was closed for about an hour.

An arrest was made as a result of the crash.

It’s believed that impaired driving may have been a factorin the crash.

This incident comes as more than a dozen local officers recently completed a two-day Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement — or ARIDE — training.

The session was hosted by the Russells Point Police Department and conducted by the state.

A deputy who responded to Friday’s crash had attended that training.
