Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced a significant investment to revitalize communities across the state.

The Ohio Department of Development will allocate $67.3 million from the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program to demolish 1,277 vacant and dilapidated structures in nine Ohio counties: Butler, Clinton, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Logan, Lucas, Muskingum, Preble, and Richland.

The program, which was launched in 2021, aims to remove blighted buildings to make way for new economic development and attract investment.

Governor DeWine emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “These buildings are standing in the way of progress, so it’s time to knock them down. Once these structures are gone, we expect to see new economic development opportunities coming into these neighborhoods.”

Lt. Governor Husted echoed this sentiment, noting, “These funds will enable our communities to turn forgotten properties into valuable assets that contribute to the modern economy. This is an investment in the future of Ohio.”

The funding comes from the Ohio General Assembly’s current operating budget, with all 88 counties eligible for at least $500,000.

The remaining funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, with additional grant recipients to be announced in the coming months.

Since its inception, the program has awarded over $200 million, supporting nearly 5,000 demolition projects statewide.

Director Lydia Mihalik highlighted the program’s impact, saying, “Removing blight can increase property values, revitalize housing markets, and eliminate safety hazards – paving the way for new businesses and opportunities.”

This effort is part of Governor DeWine’s Ohio BUILDS Initiative, which focuses on enhancing quality of life through targeted solutions like infrastructure improvements, broadband expansion, and brownfield redevelopment.
