Indian Lake Schools launched the new academic year with a spirit of resilience and teamwork, marking the start with an all-district Opening Day meeting held in the school auditorium. The event, themed “Together We Sail,” was a testament to the district’s commitment to moving forward and overcoming challenges.

Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood addressed the gathered staff, highlighting the ongoing impact of the March 14 tornado, which continues to affect many local families. “I want us all to understand that we have a lot of kids who are doubled up, living with family members or friends,” Dr. Underwood remarked. “We know how stressful that can be, so please keep this in mind as we interact with our students and families.”

Dr. Underwood also provided an update on the district’s facilities, many of which were damaged by the tornado and subsequent storms. He announced the completion of the roof replacement at Indian Lake Elementary School (ILES) and noted that the roof at Indian Lake High School (ILHS) is expected to be finished this fall. Additionally, repairs to the ILHS Main Gym floor, which was damaged by a water leak during roofing work, will begin in the coming weeks.

Curriculum Director Kelli Tebbe shared promising news regarding last year’s state testing results. Indian Lake Schools achieved proficiency or better in 20 out of 21 measured categories. Tebbe indicated that further details on state testing will be available later this fall.

In his address, Dr. Underwood also spoke about adapting to changes in the educational landscape and the broader world. “We’re going to try to figure out a way to address some of this change together, to support our kids, especially those who were impacted by the tornado,” he said.
