Looking Back at 2024: Train Derailment; Train and Semi Collision

Two separate train-related incidents occurred in our area in June 2024, with no serious injuries reported.

On June 1st, a CSX train derailed near West Mansfield, Ohio, shortly after 5:00 PM.

Twenty-seven out of 90 rail cars went off track.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The cause of the derailment was never released by CSX.

Then, on June 19th, 2024, a semi collided with a CSX train in Mt. Victory, after the driver, Richard Lavander of Ontario, Canada, ignored a railroad barricade.

Lavander saw one train stopped but didn’t notice a second set of tracks.

A CSX train traveling on the second set of tracks struck the semi, separating the tractor from the trailer.

The engine dragged the tractor for over a quarter of a mile before coming to a stop.

Lavander, who sustained minor injuries, was alert and walking after the crash.

He was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The train was not derailed, though it sustained minor damage to the engine.

A minor diesel spill from the semi prompted a Hazmat response.

Lavander was cited for disobeying a railroad crossing device.
