A Bellefontaine man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a toddler was found walking alone on North Elm Street.
According to Bellefontaine Police, just after 2:30 p.m., a woman saw the child walking near the road and called police.
Officers arrived and began checking nearby homes.
They eventually found out the child lived at a home on Oakland Square.
When officers spoke to 28-year-old Devante Smith, he said he had been asked to watch the toddler but left the house for a short time.
He claimed he had asked someone else to keep an eye on the kids while he was gone.
Police noticed the timing didn’t match, the call came in about 15 minutes before Smith said he left the house.
The toddler’s mother then arrived and told officers that Smith had agreed to watch her child, and that there was also a baby inside the home.
Smith was arrested for child endangerment and taken to the Logan County Jail.
The toddler was safely returned to their mother.
No injuries were reported.
