A Bellefontaine man is facing charges after police say he was driving under the influence Wednesday evening.

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, officers were called around 7:30 p.m. after a woman reported a possibly intoxicated driver leaving Walmart.

The caller told police she had helped a man load groceries into his car and became concerned when he seemed confused.

She said she noticed an open beer inside the vehicle and smelled alcohol before the man drove away, prompting her to call 911.

Officers later found the vehicle in the downtown area and made a traffic stop on Maple Avenue.

Police say the driver, identified as 63-year-old David East, was already under an OVI suspension.

During the stop, officers noticed signs of impairment.

East admitted to drinking earlier in the day and told officers he had also consumed a beer shortly before leaving the store.

Due to medical and mobility issues, he was unable to complete all field sobriety tests.

However, officers say there were still signs of impairment.

While being taken into custody, East began having trouble breathing.

Medics were called, and he was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, he agreed to a blood alcohol level test.

Those results are still pending.

East was cited for operating a vehicle under the influence and driving under suspension.

He is scheduled to appear in Bellefontaine Municipal Court at a later date.
