A Bellefontaine man reported being struck by a vehicle while crossing a downtown intersection last week, according to a report from the Bellefontaine Police Department.

Police were dispatched to the department lobby on May 28 to take a report regarding a vehicle-versus-pedestrian incident that allegedly occurred the day before.

According to the report, Mark McClain told officers he and his wife, Crystal McClain, were crossing East Chillicothe Avenue from north to south in the crosswalk east of South Main Street at approximately 12:10 p.m. on May 27.

McClain said he was walking more slowly than his wife because he had recently suffered injuries from a fall off a tractor. He told officers that a gray or dark blue Honda was stopped at a red light on East Chillicothe Avenue at South Main Street. As he crossed in front of the vehicle, he reported that the driver accelerated and struck him with the front left corner of the car, causing him to fall to the ground.

According to McClain, the driver stopped, opened the vehicle door, and asked if he was okay. McClain said he responded with a thumbs-up gesture, and the driver then turned north onto South Main Street and left the area.

The McClains were unable to provide a license plate number or a detailed description of the driver. Crystal McClain told officers she was unsure what the pedestrian signal was displaying at the time of the incident.

McClain later reported experiencing significant pain in his knee and ribs and wanted the incident documented. According to the police report, the couple stated that a family physician had previously determined McClain suffered multiple fractured ribs from a tractor-related fall several days earlier.

No further information about the vehicle or driver was available, and no charges have been filed.
