The Urbana Fire Division (UFD) is mourning the loss of retired firefighter George Cady, a longtime member of the department whose career and continued involvement left a lasting impact on generations of firefighters.

Cady began his service with the Urbana Fire Division on Aug. 8, 1968, dedicating decades to protecting the Urbana community. Throughout his career, he served residents while helping mentor firefighters who would follow in his footsteps.

Even after retiring, Cady remained a familiar presence within the department. Fire officials said he maintained a strong connection to the organization and was widely regarded as a steward of its history. His knowledge of the department’s past, along with the stories and experiences he shared, helped preserve the Urbana Fire Division’s traditions and legacy.

In announcing his passing, the department praised Cady’s commitment to service and the role he played in shaping the culture of the organization.

In a statement released on social media, UFD said this about Cady:

“George dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Urbana. He was a proud steward of our history, a trusted source of knowledge, and a familiar face whose stories, wisdom, and friendship helped preserve the legacy of the Urbana Fire Division for future generations.”

The Urbana Fire Division said Cady’s contributions to both the department and the community will not be forgotten.
