The Urbana police are continuing their investigation into a one-vehicle crash that occurred early Tuesday morning.
Around 12:30 am in the 300 block of Patrick Avenue (part of State Route 54), police responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident that resulted in the death of the driver.
Upon their arrival on the scene, officers discovered a 2004 Jeep Wrangler on the right shoulder of the roadway, on its top, with its driver inside, deceased from injuries.
The driver, Austin Roberts, 21, Urbana, was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
While the crash remains under investigation, police found that the jeep was southbound when it veered off the west side of the roadway, struck a tree, and flipped onto its top.
Urbana police were assisted on the scene by the Urbana Fire Division, Champaign County Sheriff’s office, the Champaign County Coroner’s office, Vernon’s Funeral Home, and Fraley’s Towing Service.
Officers reopened the roadway and cleared the scene at 3:40 am.
The last fatal crash within the City of Urbana was in 2023.
