A 38-year-old Urbana woman was arrested Thursday following a reported fight at Melvin Miller Park.
Urbana Police Division officers were dispatched around the afternoon of August 20 to the 900 block of Children’s Home Road for a report of an active fight. Officers were told the suspect had left the area in a gray 2012 Dodge.
Officers located the vehicle traveling westbound on Children’s Home Road and stopped it.
Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Kelly Gilleland of Urbana.
According to the police report, the victim told officers she had been involved in a verbal argument when Gilleland approached and became aggressive. The victim alleged Gilleland struck her in the face and slammed her head into a vehicle.
Officers said the victim had a noticeable cut above her left eye that was still bleeding and was evaluated by Urbana EMS.
Two witnesses provided police with similar accounts of the altercation. Police also obtained video recorded by another witness that showed the beginning of the incident.
According to the report, the video showed Gilleland approaching the victim before striking her and shoving her into a vehicle. Police said the two continued arguing after the incident, and the video then ended.
Gilleland told officers she intervened in a verbal argument involving a relative and the victim. She claimed the situation became physical when the victim choked her, leading Gilleland to strike the victim.
Gilleland was arrested and taken to the Tri-County Regional Jail.
She was charged with assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor. She was also cited for no operator’s license, an unclassified misdemeanor under Urbana Codified Ordinance.
