The Mechanicsburg Police Department is warning families about a dangerous social media trend after receiving reports of juveniles participating in the so-called TikTok “Door Kick Challenge.”
According to a statement released by the department, the trend involves individuals running up to homes, kicking doors, and then fleeing the area.
Police are urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about the serious safety risks and legal consequences tied to the behavior.
While some young people may view the challenge as a harmless prank or social media stunt, police say the incidents can create fear and panic for homeowners and surrounding neighbors.
Residents often have no way of knowing whether someone kicking at their door is participating in a trend or attempting to break into their home, creating potentially dangerous situations.
Mechanicsburg Police referenced a recent incident in a neighboring county where juveniles participating in similar behavior were reportedly mistaken for intruders and shot at by a homeowner. No one was injured in that case, but officials said the situation highlights how quickly these incidents can escalate.
The department emphasized that the trend could lead to multiple criminal charges, including criminal mischief, trespassing, disorderly conduct, inducing panic, or other related offenses.
Police also noted that parents may be held financially responsible for property damage caused by their children.
Additionally, officials reminded residents that doorbell cameras and neighborhood surveillance systems often assist law enforcement in identifying those involved.
Mechanicsburg Police said they are working to address the issue before someone is seriously injured and noted that incidents will be investigated with charges pursued when appropriate.
“We do not want to see anyone hurt over a social media challenge,” the department said in its release.
