A man was arrested Friday evening after police say he pulled a handgun during an argument on North Main Street in Bellefontaine.
Bellefontaine Police were called just before 7:00 PM to the 400 block of North Main Street after receiving a report that two men were arguing.
One man was reportedly armed with a baseball bat, while the other had a firearm and was wearing a cowboy hat.
When officers arrived, several people were in the street.
Witnesses told police the man with the firearm had gone into a home in the 500 block of North Main Street.
Officers found the man at the front door and detained him.
He was later identified as Nathan Welbaum, 23, of Bellefontaine.
Police spoke with the person who had been involved in the confrontation.
That person told officers their children had been outside when they saw Welbaum yelling and allegedly pulling a black handgun from his waistband and waving it toward them.
The children went inside and told their parents what happened.
The victim then went outside and asked Welbaum why he was showing the children a firearm.
The victim told police Welbaum continued waving the gun around, although it was not pointed directly at the victim.
Fearing for their safety, the victim went back inside, grabbed a baseball bat and called police.
The victim then returned outside with the bat for protection.
Officers later learned Welbaum had gone into a downstairs apartment.
The resident gave police permission to enter and told officers Welbaum had placed a loaded firearm on a windowsill.
Police recovered a black 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber.
Welbaum told police he only armed himself after the victim approached him with a baseball bat.
Police said his account did not match statements from several witnesses or the victim.
Welbaum was arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail on aggravated menacing charges.
Police also found a second magazine for the recovered handgun on Welbaum.
