Safety Town at Indian Lake Elementary School has begun, teaching young children essential skills for staying safe.
The program kicked off today with a lesson on Stranger Danger, led by Russells Point Police Chief Joe Freyhof and his team.
The children learned that a stranger is someone they don’t know and were advised never to talk to strangers, accept gifts from them, go for a ride, or go anywhere with them.
For homework, they are asked to create a Secret Family Password to share with a trusted adult in an emergency.
Over the next two weeks, all current kindergarten students at Indian Lake Elementary will participate in the full Safety Town curriculum.
The program will cover a variety of safety topics, including pedestrian safety, bus safety, playground safety, good and bad touch, fire safety, and water safety.
The lessons will conclude with a graduation ceremony.
Chief Freyhof noted that since the COVID-19 pandemic, Safety Town participation has declined, but the training remains crucial.
Kindergarten teachers will continue to reinforce these lessons with additional materials throughout the year.
Safety Town is a collaborative effort involving Indian Lake Schools, Russells Point Police, Washington Township Police, the Indian Joint Fire District, the Ohio Division of Natural Resources, and other partners.
