Train derails in Springfield

A Norfolk Southern train derailed in Springfield over the weekend.

The derailment occurred on State Route 41, just north of I-70 in Springfield just before 5 p.m. Officials report 28 cars of the 212-car train derailed.

Norfolk Southern confirmed that the cars that derailed did not contain hazardous materials to the environment or public health. Kraig Barner, Norfolk Southern’s General Manager, however, reported that some of the cars that did not derail were carrying hazardous materials.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive in Springfield today (Monday).

The cause of the derailment is unknown and will be investigated by Norfolk Southern.

688 customers were out of power due to the derailment. County officials said the train took out power lines during the incident.
