Norfolk Southern confirmed that the cars that derailed did not contain hazardous materials to the environment or public health. Kraig Barner, Norfolk Southern’s General Manager, however, reported that some of the cars that did not derail were carrying hazardous materials.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive in Springfield today (Monday).
The cause of the derailment is unknown and will be investigated by Norfolk Southern.
