An Urbana man was arrested early Sunday morning after police responded to a reported domestic violence incident involving his wife.
According to a report from the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched to a residence on Windsor Avenue at approximately 4:48 a.m. on June 21 after the couple’s daughter called 911. The caller reported that her father, 48-year-old David Conrad, was hurting her mother and that she had awakened to sounds of objects being slammed and her mother screaming.
When officers arrived, Conrad was waiting outside the home and was separated from the investigation while officers searched for his wife, who had left the residence on foot.
An officer located the woman walking near South Main and Henry streets. Police reported she had dried blood around her nose, redness on her face, and appeared visibly upset and distressed. After initially hesitating to discuss the incident, she told officers that Conrad had repeatedly harassed her while she was trying to sleep by turning lights on and off and pulling at the bed covers.
According to the report, the woman said Conrad became angry after she refused a request for a sexual favor. She told officers that he later grabbed her by the hair and pulled her into a bathroom when she attempted to use it. She also alleged that Conrad forced her to the ground, making it difficult for her to breathe.
The victim told police she left the residence at the first opportunity she had and believed Conrad may have scratches on his body from her attempts to escape.
Conrad told officers that both he and his wife had been drinking and that an argument had developed between them. He displayed scratches on his stomach and a cut on his hand, which he claimed occurred during the altercation.
Police noted that the woman repeatedly stated she did not want her husband to be arrested but admitted she did not feel safe returning home. Three children also reside in the household, according to the report.
After interviewing both parties, officers determined Conrad was the primary aggressor. He was taken into custody and transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail.
Conrad was charged with domestic violence and assault, both first-degree misdemeanors, as well as disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor. The victim was provided information regarding her rights and available resources.
